Backgrounds

Backgrounds are those things that let your character survive in the world. She may be able throw a car, but can she afford food and pay her electricity bill?

Like Attributes and Skills, Backgrounds range in Rank from 1 to 6, with each increment providing progressively more benefit as noted on the background description.

There are no “super backgrounds”.

List of Backgrounds

Connections: Within a specific sphere of influence, you are connected. You must choose a general category, such as law enforcement, finance, occult or other subject to GM approval. You may take Connections multiple times and apply to different spheres of influence. Your connections can provide you with valuable information and at higher levels, supplies, weapons and more.
==> Rank 1 = Below average. You are connected but not very.
==> Rank 2 = Average. Within your sphere, you know as much as most.
==> Rank 3 = Above Average. You are know and somewhat respected.
==> Rank 4 = Influential. Many in your sphere would help you if needed.
==> Rank 5 = Famous. You are extremely well known in your sphere and quite notable.
==> Rank 6 = Icon. In your sphere, you are the creme of the crop and have nearly unlimited access to information and help.

Costume: Not everyone wants to be a costumed hero or villain, some prefer to be more low key. There are benefits however to wearing those crazy outfits.
==> Rank 1 = Your costume looks however you want but does nothing special.
==> Rank 2 = You gain your choice of +1 damage resistance or protection from the vacuum of space or a breathing unit or 50% resistance to fire, cold, electricity, radiation or other specific form of energy.
==> Rank 3 = You gain your choice of +1 damage resistance or protection from the vacuum of space or a breathing unit or 50% resistance to fire, cold, electricity, radiation or other specific form of energy.

Mentor: You have someone who trains you, looks out for you, or at least advises you when you are about to do something unwise. Is this an ancient Chinese Kung Fu master, a wizened businessman, a brave warrior? You must think of a detailed description with GM approval. Your mentor might be able to come to your rescue now and then but it won’t be very often.
==> Rank 1 = Your mentor is wise and can offer advice.
==> Rank 2 = Your mentor can offer you safe haven or money from time to time.
==> Rank 3 = Your mentor is also a Super of basic power level.
==> Rank 4 = Your mentor is a Super of moderate power.
==> Rank 5 = Your mentor is a high-powered Super or he has extreme wealth and influence.
==> Rank 6 = Your mentor is an extremely powerful Super and knows many secrets.

Rank: You are the member of a military, paramilitary or other organization that has a rank system or other hierarchy of some sort. This could be a witch’s coven, government agents with skinny black ties or even a social club. Your rank provides you with varying levels of access to that organization’s resources. This differs from Connections in that it does not cover an entire sphere of influence, just one organization. Within that organization, however, you can potentially gain greater access. The potential drawback is that you also have responsibilities and can be called up by higher ranking members.
==> Rank 1 = Entry level. Don’t expect many favors but you can find safety with your group and you belong there.
==> Rank 2 = Experienced. You have some friends who may help sometimes.
==> Rank 3 = Ranking. You are the equivalent of a sergeant.
==> Rank 4 = Officer. You are the equivalent of a lieutenant.
==> Rank 5 = Commander. You are the equivalent of a full bird colonel.
==> Rank 6 = Supreme Commander. The buck stops with you. You have complete control subject to laws, regulations or traditions limiting your power.

Secret Lair: Whether you are a hero or villain you might want a place no one else can find. This can be as simple as a house that no one else knows about or it could be an elaborate volcano hideout depending on how much you invest in this Background.
==> Rank 1 = Very basic, whether a run-down apartment or sewer tunnels.
==> Rank 2 = Comfortable. A basic row house with some privacy or the like.
==> Rank 3 = Some accouterments. Private location with alarms sensor and video.
==> Rank 4 = Secure. Your lair has a top notch security system and good locks.
==> Rank 5 = High Tech. Maybe an isolated mansion or a nice condo but with biometrics and other features to keep you safe.
==> Rank 6 = Sky’s the limit. Your lair has everything a hero or villain could want, with GM approval.

Wealth: much like it sounds, this is simply the amount of money and assets your character possesses. If your character has Profession, this would be the result of their income and savings. If they do not have a job, think of a reason as to why your character has money. Trust fund, generous mentor, etc. If you have no wealth, you will be depending on the kindness of others to survive. That or theft.
==> Rank 1 = Below average Income. Fast food employee, bank teller, etc.
==> Rank 2 = Average Income. Construction worker, college graduate.
==> Rank 3 = Above Average Income. Low level management, foreman.
==> Rank 4 = Affluent. Entry level executive, successful business owner.
==> Rank 5 = Wealthy. CEO, very successful business owner.
==> Rank 6 = Extremely Wealthy. You have more money than you know what to do with.
